
A chain of 70 islands, the Mentawai Islands lie off the western coast of Sumatra in Indonesia. Siberut is the largest of the Mentawai Islands ( 4,030 km²). The other major islands are Sipura, Pagai Utara (North Pagai) and Pagai Selatan (South Pagai)
The Mentawai Islands is one of the best surf spots in the world. The islands face the great southern Indian Ocean and have fantastic waves all year round. However, the perfect time to surf in the Mentawai's is late March to early November, when the Indian Ocean churns surf-perfect swells.

Villages are scattered throughout the Mentawai Islands. The indigenous inhabitants of the islands are known as the Mentawai, and they are open, friendly and extremely hospitable. Locals often paddle out to surf charter boats to sell their hand-crafted wares.
The Mentawai landscape is made up of slopes of dense tropical forests. As malaria is an issue on the Mentawai Islands, precautions must be taken during a surf trip. Insect repellent, covered clothing are recommended and surfers are advised to stay clear of swamps after evening.
